Qualifications Framework

Sida Masters Scholarships

The Masters Scholarships Programme is designed in a way that will result in outcomes of more people with better qualifications and more motivation to address poverty in the region. This will in turn result in better conceived and implemented poverty initiatives providing direct benefits to the poor in both the rural and urban areas Lack of human resources with this capacity directly hampers the fight against poverty in Asia. The Masters Scholarships success of the programme will be judged on measurable impact on poverty, not by academic excellence.

In order to achieve this, the following criteria and requirements apply to the students supported by the programme.

The focus of the Masters Scholarships cooperation is on poverty alleviation. Applicants must have work experience in and demonstrate commitment to work on poverty alleviation to be eligible for the support. The applicants need to provide a written account of their background and their intentions after graduation with respect to work in poverty alleviation.

Nationals from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar (some restrictions apply) are eligible to apply. Applications from women are encouraged. Applicants with rural backgrounds or those working in rural areas (including small townships) are given priority in the selection. In the past the recipients of scholarships in the target countries are disproportionately coming from the major urban centres.

The allocation of Masters Scholarships is on a competitive basis to any of the Field of Study (FoS) at AIT. The amount of the scholarship for each student is flexible, depending on the level of support (pre-study and during study) that each student may require, as it is expected that most applicants are in need of additional support in language, computers and other academic skills. AIT will establish in-country support programs as necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the program. The scholarships may be offered as flexible Masters where the student can arrange the study periods at AIT around work commitments.

The Schools admitting students under this programme shall take responsibility of ensuring that all students comply with the conditions and requirements in terms of courses and thesis topics as stipulated in the offer letter to the relevant candidates (see outline below).

PhD Masters Scholarships offered under this programme (tentatively beginning in 2011) are expected to have access to additional research funds through the support by Sida to AIT for research.

Specific requirements of the Scholarship recipient to be include in the offer letter.

1. An individualized study plan must be developed by the Student and his/her supervisor, this should include any need for additional tutoring/mentoring during the study period and if the student require a flexible-MSc/PhD programme to fit with work or other commitments. This plan must include two (or more) credits in courses identified as addressing poverty issues.

3. The Student is committed to engage in follow up and monitoring activities once the studies are completed (i.e. after graduation).

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry studies the effects of emissions from energy use on the atmospheric environment. The aerosol research in our laboratory involves emission characterization, field campaigns, smog chamber studies and long-term measurements at the high alpine site Jungfraujoch.

We are an international team of scientists working on chemical and physical processes of atmospheric aerosols and their effects on the environment. We are looking for a

in aerosol chemistry using elemental analysis

Your tasks

The goal of the PhD thesis is to study the elemental composition of ambient aerosols using X-ray spectrometry, and its eventual apportionment to possible sources. You will participate in ambient aerosol sampling with rotating drum impactors. The samples are subsequently analyzed with synchrotron-radiation-induced X-ray fluorescence at the SLS to determine their elemental composition. You will refine the calibration method and build an experimental chamber to measure the samples in either a helium atmosphere or in vacuum. You will interpret the measurements with respect to their sources applying receptor modeling approaches, e.g. positive matrix factorization. The results from your measurements will help to distinguish between different key emitters of combustion aerosols.
The position requires a diploma or Master’s degree in chemistry, physics or environmental sciences with excellent grades. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated individual who enjoys fieldwork in atmospheric chemistry, experimental work in X-ray spectrometry, and also has interest in advanced statistical methods. Knowledge in computer programming on MS-Windows and Linux systems is required. The position requires a high motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment, and excellent communication skills. Written and spoken English is required, and speaking German is an advantage.

The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program at the University of Rochester is a well-rounded, three-year program designed to train well-qualified candidates committed to the care of children with kidney disease, for careers as independent physician scientists and academic pediatric nephrologists.

The focus of the combined clinical and laboratory training is to provide a combination of excellence in clinical, administrative, research, and teaching skills essential to making significant contributions to our understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of disease processes.

The fellowship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME),with, in general, one fellow per year of training.

Fellows have plentiful outpatient and inpatient opportunities on the Pediatric Nephrology Service at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong allowing them to develop expertise in the clinical diagnosis and management of disorders of the kidney and urologic system, hypertension, kidney replacement therapy, and fluid and electrolyte disorders in neonates, infants, children, and young adults.

Research is an integral component of the division where fellows are closely guided by faculty with diverse research interests that include:

Bench research in kidney physiology and pathophysiology as well as molecular aspects of kidney development
Clinical studies involving hypertension and it’s effects and estimates of glomerular filtration rate
Opportunities may exist for selected individuals to fulfill their research requirements while pursuing a Masters of Public Health (MPH).
Fellows are an integral part of the division and develop skills to teach medical students and house staff the principles of recognizing, evaluating, and treating fluid and electrolyte problems and kidney disease in children. Fellows also participate with faculty in serving as a source of continuing medical education for the general pediatric community.

The Heart Foundation and the National Stroke Foundation are partnering to offer funding for Postgraduate Scholarships for research into the prevention, causes, diagnosis, treatment and long term support for stroke.

Scholarships will only be awarded to postgraduate students to support study towards a PhD. Awards are payable for up to three years for a Scholarship. Part-time applicants will also be considered. A separate application is not required for part-time awards.

Measurements of ecosystems respiration (both autotrophic and heterotrophic) and their responses to environmental conditions gradients, particularly drought. Modeling of different ecosystem respiration components by integrating gained knowledge into GOTILWA+ processes description.

Program Description

Ecosystem respiration is composed of various compartments, from leaf maintenance and growth, though to the stem, fine roots, and soil respiration. This makes it difficult to accurately model, and thus contributes the highest uncertainty when modelling net ecosystem exchange for terrestrial ecosystems. It is also poorly understood how each compartment responds to water stress and nutrient availability. This project aims to reduce this uncertainty through field measurements along an environmental gradient and subsequent model development and integration of knowledge gained into the forest model Gotilwa+.

Target ecosystems: those measured by existing experiments and available databases (as FLUXNET and other field experiments,...)
Activities such as Model inter-comparison in relation to ecosystems respiration responses to environmental conditions will be performed as well as model applications using climate change projections to evaluate the impacts on carbon balance.

As result of this research project the applicant will acquire:

- Field measurements skills; the design and execution of experimental studies.
- Advanced statistical techniques for data analysis.
- Visual Basic and C computer languages.
- Scientific knowledge about model-data fusion techniques - terrestrial carbon cycle modelling on a local and a European scale or even larger.
- Complex computer models, structure and application, code writing and debugging

Indian Institute of Advanced Studies invites applications for the award of scholarships at the International Institute for Advanced Studies in the following areas:

1. Social, political philosophy and economic
2. Comparative Indian Literature (including ancient, medieval, folk and modern Tribal)
3. Comparative Studies in Philosophy and Religion
4. Comparative Studies in History (including history and philosophy of history)
5. Education, Culture, Arts and Crafts
6. Basic concepts and problems of logic and mathematics
7. Concepts and fundamental issues of science and biological studies of H. environmental
8. Indian culture in relation to neighboring countries in Asia and
9. The problems of contemporary India in the context of national integration and nation building.

UAE : Full Scholarships at MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology

Full scholarship is available to qualified talented students who meet its high admission standards which include appropriate TOEFL score, GRE and an excellent CGPA from a recognized university. A minimum CGPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) or 2:1 in the British system, minimum TOEFL score of 577, and a minimum GRE quantitative score of 700 are the basic requirements without which an applicant will most likely not be considered.

Students accepted into the Masdar Institute will be offered a full scholarship which includes the following:

100% tuition fee scholarship
Textbooks
Laptop
Medical Insurance
Housing in a single unit apartment (at the Masdar campus)
International students will receive reimbursement of travel expenses (economy class air-ticket) into Abu Dhabi and back home after completion of studies. Travel expenses (return economy class air-ticket) back to the student's home country at the end of the 1st year of studies will also be reimbursed.
Reimbursement of TOEFL and GRE exam fees (upon registration at Masdar Institute and submission of original receipts)
A competitive stipend per month (cost of living allowance).
No bond or conditions to the scholarship upon graduation

The scholarship and benefits are subject to the student maintaining a minimum CGPA as determined by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and satisfactory progress on their research

Application Deadline

The Institute will practice a rolling admissions process. Applicants who clearly meet the high admission standards will be offered admission immediately.

Those who clearly do not meet the admission standards will also be informed immediately.

Others may be kept-in-view subject to further evaluation of the applicants' academic credentials.

From the date a complete application is received (GRE, TOEFL, transcripts, letters of reference, etc) the Institute will provide a final decision at the very latest within 2 months. In most cases it is likely to be earlier than 2 months.
